Possible Expansion of Dwight Merkel Sports Complex

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Parks & Recreation and Spokane Public Schools are pushing to nearly double the size of the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex, adding six new rectangular fields if voters approve upcoming funding measures in November 2025. With only two all-weather fields available, the current capacity limits recreational opportunities for local teams, often forcing families to travel for tournaments. The proposed expansion would include at least three all-weather fields, which would facilitate year-round play and support local youth sports participation. Community leaders highlight that this initiative would retain regional tournaments in Spokane, alleviating travel costs for families and fostering local pride. Maintenance of the new fields will be managed by Spokane Parks & Recreation, ensuring their longevity and usability.

This effort aligns with Spokane Public Schools' Engage IRL initiative, which encourages active participation among youth. As demand for sports facilities grows, local coaches express concern over the current lack of capacity. If funding measures pass, construction is slated to begin in 2026, with the expansion expected to enhance community engagement and economic activity.
