New Partnership Reserves Shelter Beds for First Responders to Support Unhoused Residents
The City of Spokane has initiated a partnership with Catholic Charities Eastern Washington to enhance support for unhoused individuals through a new resource for first responders. This initiative reserves three emergency shelter beds at the House of Charity, specifically available for police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel from 9 p. m. to midnight. The goal is to connect individuals with immediate shelter and supportive services, thus addressing the critical issue of homelessness in the community.
Mayor Lisa Brown remarked that this collaboration illustrates how partnerships can drive effective solutions. Rob McCann, CEO of Catholic Charities, expressed excitement about the initiative, highlighting its importance in ensuring first responders have the necessary resources. Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg added that the partnership provides a reliable option that blends public safety with compassionate care. Additionally, Spokane Police Department Assistant Chief Steve Wohl noted the significance of connecting vulnerable individuals with wrap-around services to stabilize their situations. This initiative represents a proactive step in Spokane's ongoing efforts to address homelessness comprehensively.
