Spokane to release illustrated zine on civic engagement at April 17th Lilac City Live event

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane is gearing up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its neighborhood council system with the launch of an informative zine aimed at fostering civic engagement among residents. The zine will be unveiled at the upcoming Lilac City Live event on April 17, which promises an evening of live music, refreshments, and engaging discussions with city officials. Created by the city’s Office of Neighborhood Services, the zine will feature illustrations by local artist Madison Merica, who was chosen through a competitive selection process. City spokeswoman Erin Hut highlighted the distinctive nature of Spokane’s citizen government, explaining how the zine serves as a vital resource for understanding local governance. It will cover essential topics such as how an ordinance becomes law and how residents can reach out to their council members.

This initiative responds to frequent requests from citizens for clearer insights into the workings of their local government. The event will also showcase interviews with prominent figures, including Mayor Lisa Brown and the celebrated “punmaster” Annica Eagle. The project is funded entirely by a $10,000 grant from Avista and support from local businesses, reinforcing the community's commitment to civic education.
