PlanSpokane Climate Survey Provides Insights for Resilient Future
Spokane's Community Climate Planning Survey, which garnered 1,573 responses, has provided critical insights into the climate hazards affecting local residents, particularly concerning wildfires and extreme heat. Approximately 24% of participants reported direct impacts from wildfires, while a staggering 57. 5% experienced the effects of extreme heat, raising alarms about community safety and economic implications. These findings underscore the urgency of developing resilient policies to address these challenges effectively. Additionally, the survey revealed a strong community concern about local food production, with around 30% of respondents ranking it as their top priority for the next 20 years.
Factors such as drought and unpredictable weather patterns threaten successful home gardening, further emphasizing the need for actionable solutions. The results will significantly inform climate and resiliency policy recommendations for the upcoming PlanSpokane 2046 Comprehensive Plan update. As the city prepares for a warmer climate, residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming engagement opportunities, including an Earth Day Community Workshop.
