Red light cameras coming soon to Spokanes most dangerous intersection

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane is preparing to install two red-light cameras at the intersection of Mission Avenue and Greene Street, which has been identified as the city’s most accident-prone location since 2017, with a significant number of injuries reported. Despite no fatalities occurring in the past eight years, the area has seen several serious collisions, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced traffic safety measures. Deputy City Administrator Maggie Yates indicated that the city administration is contemplating adding as many as ten more cameras to further reduce traffic violations and accidents. However, the implementation of these additional cameras raises questions about funding and the capacity of the municipal court system to handle the increased volume of tickets. Current cameras average nearly 1,700 tickets annually, generating substantial revenue, which could be directed toward additional staffing needs.

A new state law has limited traffic fines, potentially affecting future revenue from these cameras. Local officials are debating whether to finance the cameras through sales tax funds or ticket revenue. This initiative underscores a broader commitment to improving road safety in Spokane and addressing the community's traffic concerns.
