We need to fight Spokane NAACP, prominent Spokane figures respond to Trumps DEI attacks

Spokane, WALocal News

At a recent brainstorming session hosted by the Spokane NAACP, community advocates rallied to combat escalating attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles, particularly in light of President Donald Trump's recent executive actions. Spokane NAACP President Lisa Gardner emphasized the need for proactive engagement, stating, "We’re under attack, and we can’t just sit by. " The town hall attracted around 100 community members who sought to develop actionable strategies for defending DEI initiatives. A panel of experts, including Black Lens Editor April Eberhardt, discussed the historical roots of DEI efforts and their essential role in creating a just society. Eberhardt noted that the acronym DEI has become politicized, yet its principles are fundamental to American values.

Attendees expressed a commitment to fostering a more inclusive environment, with discussions focusing on both recruitment and retention of diverse individuals within organizations. The event served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by marginalized communities and the collective responsibility to advocate for equity. As the political landscape evolves, local leaders are determined to push back against divisive rhetoric and policies.
