City of Spokane Community Safety Proposal

Spokane, WALocal News

The City of Spokane is set to propose a Community Safety Sales Tax that aims to enhance funding for vital public safety services, including the Spokane Fire Department and Police. If the proposal is approved, it is expected to generate around $6. 5 million, which will be used to replace outdated fire equipment, improve fire stations, and reinstate the Fire Academy. The Spokane Police Department plans to relaunch its Neighborhood Resource Officer program and strengthen its Traffic Unit to better engage with community safety issues. The Office of the Police Ombuds will see increased staffing to handle a rise in complaints and enhance community outreach efforts.

Furthermore, the Spokane Municipal Court will focus on sustaining therapeutic courts and improving pre-trial case management. The tax will cost $1 for every $1,000 spent in the city, with exemptions for essential goods like food and rent. This initiative is critical for reducing jail strain and improving overall community safety. As the proposal gains attention, city officials emphasize the importance of investing in a safer Spokane for all residents.
