Spokane County Commissioners approve 2025 property tax increases; average homeowner to pay extra $3 annually

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County commissioners have approved a 1% increase in property taxes for 2025, which will add an estimated $3 annually for the average homeowner. This decision, made during a special meeting, is intended to address rising operational costs and stagnant sales tax revenues exacerbated by inflation. The approved tax increase is expected to contribute approximately $652,000 to the county's general fund and an additional $24,000 to the Conservation Futures fund, which supports local natural area preservation. Despite having previously rejected tax increases in 2022 and 2023, the current economic climate prompted the board to reconsider. Proponents of the increase highlighted the urgent need for adequate funding for public safety services, including the Sheriff's Office and public defenders.

Conversely, dissenting commissioners expressed concerns about the tax burden on residents and advocated for utilizing reserve funds instead. The board's decision underscores the ongoing budgetary challenges faced by local governments in Washington, with the final budget for 2025 set for approval on December 2.
