Update on DNR Thorpe Property Trust Land Transfer Request

Spokane, WALocal News

The City of Spokane has initiated a significant effort to secure the Thorpe Road property through the Trust Land Transfer program of the Department of Natural Resources. This partnership with local advocates aims to ensure that the land is preserved for public use, aligning with the city's Parks & Natural Lands Master Plan. However, the application faced a setback, ranking 18th out of 30 submissions, which does not meet the criteria for funding consideration by the DNR. In light of this, the Spokane City Council is exploring a resolution to extend the public comment period regarding the property sale. This extension would enable further discussion with community stakeholders, aiming to identify a collaborative path forward.

Erin Hut, the Director of Communications, highlighted the importance of engaging local voices in this process. The final decision about the land's future will ultimately rest with the DNR, but the city remains committed to advocating for preservation. This situation reflects broader themes of local governance and community engagement in land use decisions.
