Spokane County Seeks Voter Approval for Juvenile Detention Facilities Tax Renewal

Spokane, WashingtonLocal News

Spokane County is preparing for a significant vote on a tax renewal measure aimed at supporting its Juvenile Detention Facilities and Jails, set for the November 5, 2024 General Election. The Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution on July 16, 2024, asking voters to renew a 1/10th of 1% sales and use tax, which translates to $0. 01 on a $10 purchase. This tax is crucial for funding the operations and maintenance of the county's juvenile facilities, which are facing increased demand due to rising juvenile offenses. From 2022 to 2023, felony offenses referred to the Spokane County Juvenile Court rose by 25%, while gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor offenses surged by 44%.

The funds from the tax renewal will be earmarked exclusively for staffing, medical care, facility maintenance, and various juvenile justice programs such as electronic monitoring and diversion initiatives. The current tax is set to expire on December 31, 2025, making voter approval critical for continued operations. Spokane County's Juvenile Justice Department currently administers a range of programs designed to support at-risk youth and ensure compliance with the law. If approved, the renewal will help sustain essential services and respond to the increasing needs of the juvenile justice system.
