Fatal Early Morning House Fire in Northwest Spokane Claims Life of Child

Spokane, WALocal News

A house fire in Northwest Spokane early Monday morning has tragically claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy. Firefighters from the Spokane Fire Department, aided by Spokane County Fire District 9, arrived promptly and rescued a disoriented adult female from the residence. The boy was later found in the basement bedroom, where the fire started, and was pronounced dead at the scene. His grandmother attempted to extinguish the fire before escaping and alerting others in the home, allowing them to evacuate safely. The Spokane Fire Department determined the fire was incendiary, caused by the child igniting combustible materials.

Investigators, including the Spokane Police Department and an arson dog, assisted in the investigation as per standard procedure in fatal fires. The department urges parents to seek help for children who play with fire, promoting their Youth Fire-Setting Prevention Program. This incident underscores the critical importance of fire safety and early intervention in preventing tragic outcomes.
