Fatal Early Morning House Fire in Northwest Spokane Claims Life of Child
Early Monday morning, Spokane Fire Department responded to a house fire on West Rowan Avenue, where an 11-year-old boy died. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-story home with flames visible from the basement window. They quickly rescued the boy's grandmother, who had attempted to extinguish the fire but was overwhelmed by smoke. Firefighters later discovered the child in the basement bedroom, already deceased, alongside two dogs and a cat. Investigators concluded the fire was incendiary, linked to the child's actions.
The Red Cross is now assisting three adults and three children displaced by the fire. The Spokane Fire Department urges parents to intervene if children show a history of fire-setting behavior. This tragedy highlights the critical need for fire safety education in homes.
