Stuff Green Carts with Food and Yard Waste

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will conduct curbside food and yard waste collection during winter months, with designated pickups on December 1-5, January 5-9, and February 2-6. Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlighted the service's introduction as a response to community requests for extended waste management options. The initiative aims to assist residents in managing yard cleanup during winter and promote the use of green carts for food disposal. During the holiday season, residents are urged to minimize food waste by preparing appropriately sized meals and encouraging guests to take leftovers in their own containers. The city allows a variety of acceptable materials in green carts, including yard waste and various food scraps, but prohibits plastic bags to avoid extra disposal fees.

Customers can also dispose of up to three extra paper bags of leaves at a reduced rate. Additionally, Spokane’s Waste to Energy facility remains open year-round for recycling clean green materials. The minimum charge for disposal at the facility is $7. 62 for up to 200 pounds.
