Stuff Green Carts with Food and Yard Waste

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will provide curbside food and yard waste pickups during winter months, starting December 1-5, 2025. This initiative responds to community requests for extended yard cleanup opportunities, with additional collection weeks on January 5-9 and February 2-6, 2026. Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlighted the importance of green carts for food disposal, noting that holiday feasts often lead to increased food waste. Residents are encouraged to fill their green carts with yard waste and food scraps, while avoiding the practice of pushing leaves into the street, which can block stormwater drainage. Customers can add the curbside service by submitting an online request or calling 311.

The City’s Waste to Energy facility accepts clean green materials year-round, with a minimum charge of $7. 62 for up to 200 pounds. This initiative not only supports waste reduction but also promotes composting, which is essential for community sustainability. Utilizing green carts helps divert waste from landfills, contributing to a cleaner environment.
