Stuff Green Carts with Food and Yard Waste

Spokane, WALocal News

The City of Spokane will initiate winter curbside food and yard waste collection, beginning with a pick-up from December 1-5, 2025. This service responds to community requests for continued waste management options beyond November, particularly during favorable winter weather. Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlighted the initiative's role in encouraging residents to use green carts for food waste disposal. Residents are urged to maximize their green carts with yard waste before the December pick-up while avoiding plastic bags, which lead to additional fees. The city allows customers to dispose of up to three extra paper bags of leaves at a discounted rate, promoting responsible waste management.

As holiday feasts often generate significant food waste, residents are encouraged to plan meals carefully and utilize green carts for leftovers. Spokane's Waste to Energy facility remains open year-round for recycling yard and food waste, ensuring proper disposal options. This expanded service reflects the city's commitment to environmental sustainability and community needs.
