Fatal Early Morning House Fire in Northwest Spokane Claims Life of Child
A house fire in Spokane's Northwest neighborhood resulted in the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy early Monday morning. The Spokane Fire Department received reports at 12:14 a. m. and dispatched crews, who arrived within five minutes to find flames visible from a basement window. Firefighters rescued the boy's grandmother, who was treated for smoke inhalation, but tragically discovered the boy deceased in the basement bedroom.
Investigators determined the fire was incendiary, ignited by the child after his grandmother's attempts to smother it failed. She alerted the other residents, allowing them to evacuate safely. The Red Cross is assisting six displaced residents, including three children. The Spokane Fire Department emphasizes the critical need for early intervention in fire incidents, especially for children with a history of fire play.
