Stuff Green Carts with Food and Yard Waste
Spokane's curbside food and yard waste service will operate in winter, starting with pick-ups from Dec. 1-5, 2025. Public Works Director Marlene Feist stated that this initiative responds to community requests for year-round waste collection services. The green carts, which can hold a variety of yard waste and food scraps, serve as a critical resource for residents during the holiday season, a time when food waste typically increases. Spokane encourages residents to plan meals thoughtfully and utilize their green carts effectively to minimize waste.
The city prohibits plastic bags in green carts, which triggers higher disposal fees, while paper leaf bags are allowed. Up to three extra bags of leaves can be disposed of at a discounted rate, promoting composting efforts. The Waste to Energy facility accepts clean green materials year-round, providing an alternative for recyclers and composters. This expanded service aims to enhance community engagement in sustainable waste management practices.
