New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will soon activate photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St, identified as a high-risk area for traffic incidents. The Spokane Police Department recorded 18 crashes at this intersection since the beginning of 2023, prompting officials to take action. A 30-day grace period starting November 24 will allow drivers to receive warnings, after which violations will lead to a $145 fine. Director of Transportation and Sustainability Jon Snyder highlighted the urgency of improving road safety, stating that any injury or fatality is one too many. Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe from the Spokane Police Department affirmed that red light cameras have previously led to reductions in collisions and speeding at monitored intersections.

Additional cameras will also be deployed near Shadle Park High School and Shaw Middle School, as well as at N Division St and E Magnesium Rd. The initiative aims to enhance safety for all road users in the city. This action reflects Spokane's broader commitment to traffic safety improvements amid rising collision rates.
