New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will soon activate photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St as part of Mayor Lisa Brown’s traffic safety initiatives. The Spokane Police Department selected this intersection due to 18 crashes reported since 2023, indicating significant safety concerns. A 30-day grace period will commence on November 24, allowing drivers to receive warnings before facing a $145 fine for red light violations. Director of Transportation and Sustainability Jon Snyder emphasized the unacceptable rise in traffic collisions, stating that each injury or death is one too many. Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe of the Spokane Police Department confirmed that red light cameras have previously led to reductions in collisions and speeding at other intersections.

Additional traffic safety cameras will be installed near Shadle Park High School and Shaw Middle School to promote safer driving. This proactive measure reflects the city’s commitment to improving road safety for all residents. As Spokane continues to enhance its traffic management strategies, these cameras aim to create safer streets for the community.
