New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will soon activate new photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St, a location noted for its high traffic volume and crash rate. The Spokane Police Department selected this intersection due to 18 reported crashes in 2023, highlighting serious safety concerns. A 30-day grace period begins on November 24, during which violators will receive warnings; afterwards, the fine for running a red light will be $145. Transportation Director Jon Snyder stated that the rise in traffic collisions is unacceptable and that the cameras are essential for promoting safer driving. Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe confirmed that similar installations have led to reductions in collisions and speeds at other intersections.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance traffic safety in Spokane, with additional cameras set to be deployed near Shadle Park High School and Shaw Middle School. The city aims to create safer streets for all residents by reminding drivers to adhere to traffic signals. Ultimately, these measures reflect Spokane's commitment to improving public safety through proactive traffic management.
