New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will soon activate new photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St as part of Mayor Lisa Brown's traffic safety improvements. This decision comes in response to 18 crashes at the intersection in 2023, which has raised significant safety concerns among city officials. A 30-day grace period will start on November 24, during which violators will receive warnings instead of fines. Following this period, a $145 fine will be imposed for running a red light at the intersection. Transportation Director Jon Snyder pointed out that any injury or death on the roads is unacceptable, and these cameras could help remind drivers to slow down.

Spokane Police Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe noted a decrease in collisions at intersections equipped with red light cameras. Additional cameras will be installed near Shadle Park High School and Shaw Middle School to further enhance traffic safety in the area. The city aims to create safer streets for all residents through these initiatives.
