New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will activate new photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St to address serious safety concerns. The Spokane Police Department identified this intersection, which has seen 18 crashes since 2023, as a high-risk area. A 30-day grace period begins on November 24, allowing drivers to receive warnings before facing a $145 fine for violations. Transportation Director Jon Snyder highlighted the unacceptable rise in traffic collisions, asserting that every injury or death on the road is one too many. Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe pointed to the success of red light cameras in reducing collisions, emphasizing that safer driving leads to fewer accidents.

Additional cameras will be deployed near Shadle Park High School and Shaw Middle School, and at the intersection of N Division St and E Magnesium Rd. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance traffic safety across Spokane. Officials remain committed to fostering safer streets for all residents.
