New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will activate new photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St, which has recorded 18 crashes since the beginning of 2023. This initiative is part of Mayor Lisa Brown’s traffic safety improvement package, aimed at addressing rising collision rates. A 30-day grace period will start on November 24, during which violators will receive warnings before facing a $145 fine. Director of Transportation and Sustainability Jon Snyder stated that any injury or death on the roads is one too many, highlighting the importance of this measure. Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe remarked that previous installations of red-light cameras have led to declines in accidents and speeding.

Additional cameras will be deployed near Shadle Park High School, Shaw Middle School, and at the intersection of N Division St and E Magnesium Rd to further enhance community safety. The Spokane Police Department emphasizes that safer driving contributes to fewer collisions, making streets safer for all residents. This proactive approach reflects the city's commitment to improving traffic safety and reducing accidents.
