Suspect Identified in Unsolved Murder of Margaret Anselmo
Spokane Police have identified Brian J. Anderson as the suspect in the 1997 murder of Margaret Anselmo, utilizing Forensic Genetic Genealogy to make the breakthrough. Anselmo's body was found on January 3, 1997, in an alley, showing signs of severe head trauma and indications of sexual assault. Despite initial investigative challenges, the case gained traction when evidence was sent to Othram, a genealogy company. A local genealogist helped identify Anderson's relatives, who provided DNA for analysis, revealing that one was Anderson's child and another his half-brother.
If he were alive today, Spokane Police would charge Anderson with 1st Degree Murder and 1st Degree Rape. The case highlights the growing role of genetic genealogy in solving cold cases. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to call Crime Check at 509. 456. 2233.
This development may bring some closure to Anselmo’s surviving family.
