Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance
Spokane City Council members will introduce the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance at the Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting on Monday. This ordinance gives police officers discretion to offer services to individuals willing to accept help and to cite repeat violators of camping and obstruction laws. Under the legislation, camping on public property will be illegal, and additional measures will address issues like protecting waterways and enforcing safety standards. Council Member Zack Zappone emphasized the need for a balanced approach to aid vulnerable individuals while enforcing regulations. Meanwhile, Council Member Michael Cathcart acknowledged the collaborative efforts of his colleagues to enhance accountability and community safety.
The ordinance also aims to clarify enforcement discretion, addressing concerns from a previously passed ordinance. This legislative effort reflects an ongoing commitment to address public safety and homelessness in Spokane. The council will establish the timeline for further legislative action at the upcoming committee meeting.
