Spokane Police Dept. Awarded Federal Mental Health and Wellness Grant

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department has received a $186,250 grant from the U. S. Department of Justice to enhance mental health and wellness services for officers. Funded by the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA), the grant will support programs like Struggle Well classes and training on nutrition, sleep, and stress reduction. Police Chief Kevin Hall highlighted the necessity of officer well-being for effective community service.

The initiative reflects an increasing acknowledgment of the mental health challenges in law enforcement. Emergency services can be reached by calling 911, while mental health crises can be addressed by calling 988 for trained counselors. The grant allows SPD to implement peer support and suicide prevention strategies, further promoting officer wellness. This funding is part of a broader movement to prioritize mental health within law enforcement agencies. The Spokane Police Department aims to create a healthier work environment and improve overall community safety.
