Spokane Police Dept. Awarded Federal Mental Health and Wellness Grant

The Spokane Police Department has secured a $186,250 grant from the U. S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services to bolster mental health services for officers. Funded through the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA), this grant will implement programs such as Struggle Well classes and training focused on nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness. Police Chief Kevin Hall stated that the well-being of officers is vital for their ability to serve the community effectively.

The initiative will provide essential resources, including peer support and suicide prevention training, to enhance mental health among law enforcement personnel. This funding underscores a significant shift towards prioritizing mental health in policing, addressing the stressors faced by officers. As mental health crises become more prevalent, such programs aim to reduce stigma and promote wellness within the force. The Spokane Police Department joins a growing number of law enforcement agencies recognizing the importance of mental health support.
