Spokane Police Dept. Awarded Federal Mental Health and Wellness Grant

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department has been awarded a $186,250 grant from the U. S. Department of Justice to bolster mental health and wellness services for its officers. This funding, part of the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA), will support programs like Struggle Well classes and training in nutrition, sleep, stress reduction, and mindfulness. Police Chief Kevin Hall emphasized the critical link between officer wellness and community service, stating, "In order to take care of our community, our officers must also take care of themselves.

" The grant will also enable the implementation of peer support networks, family resources, and suicide prevention strategies. These initiatives reflect a national trend towards prioritizing mental health in law enforcement. As agencies face increasing demands, the focus on officer well-being is essential for effective community policing. This investment not only assists officers but also enhances public safety. With mental health crises on the rise, such funding is increasingly vital for sustaining police services.
