Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane City Council members will introduce the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance during Monday's Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting. This ordinance aims to empower Spokane Police Department officers to offer services to individuals willing to accept help, while also allowing them to cite repeat violators of camping and obstruction laws. Camping on public property and obstructing access to private property will be deemed illegal under this legislation. The ordinance incorporates measures to protect waterways, publicly owned trees, and to prevent illegal fires and litter. Council Member Zack Zappone emphasized the need for a balanced approach, stating the goal is to assist vulnerable populations while enforcing the law against those who refuse help.

Council Member Michael Cathcart also voiced support for the ordinance, highlighting its commitment to accountability and community safety. The anticipated discussion will set the legislative timeline for the ordinance's implementation. Members of the public can access the ordinance and sign up to testify at the committee meeting through a provided link.
