Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane City Council will introduce the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance at Monday's Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting. The ordinance aims to address unauthorized camping and obstruction by giving police the discretion to offer services or cite violators. It makes camping on public property illegal, while also focusing on protecting local waterways and public trees. This proposal arises from concerns about the challenges posed by public camping, with Council Member Zack Zappone stating the need for a balanced approach to assist vulnerable individuals. Council Member Michael Cathcart highlighted the unacceptable conditions on the streets and the importance of accountability in upholding community safety.

The ordinance also clarifies enforcement discretion for officers, addressing a previous legislative ambiguity. Members of the public can view the ordinance and sign up to testify at the committee meeting via a provided link. The council plans to establish a timeline for legislative action during the discussion.
