New Street Outreach Team Close 96 Encampments in First 10 Days

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane's new street outreach teams, formed with Catholic Charities, cleared 96 encampments within 12 days of launching. Most sites did not have residents, but many individuals accepted connections to housing and behavioral health services. Mayor Brown emphasized the need for improved coordination among social workers, medical professionals, and law enforcement to achieve long-term success. Jonathan Mallahan, President of Catholic Charities Housing Ventures, noted that these efforts have reduced the number of individuals living outdoors. The outreach teams are strategically located across all four Spokane Police Department precincts, including downtown, to maximize their impact.

Spokane 311 will roll out a new outreach reporting feature next week, allowing residents to report individuals in need and ensure timely assistance. This initiative represents a proactive approach to addressing homelessness and connecting vulnerable populations with necessary services. The partnership between the city and Catholic Charities exemplifies a community commitment to sustainable solutions.
