Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance

Spokane City Council will introduce the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance at the Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting on Monday. The ordinance aims to provide Spokane Police Department officers with the discretion to cite violators of public camping laws and offer services to those who accept help. Under this legislation, camping on public property, including rights-of-way and private property entrances, will be illegal. Council Member Zack Zappone highlighted the need for a balanced approach to address public camping while also assisting vulnerable individuals. Council Member Michael Cathcart noted the importance of accountability to ensure the safety and respect of the community.

The ordinance also includes measures to protect waterways and public trees, prevent illegal fires, and address litter issues.
