New Street Outreach Team Close 96 Encampments in First 10 Days

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane's new street outreach teams, launched in partnership with Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington, achieved significant results by clearing 96 encampments in just 12 days. These teams visited all sites related to active cases, with most individuals choosing to connect with available housing and behavioral health services. Mayor Brown emphasized the outreach teams' critical role in fostering sustainable change and stressed the importance of collaboration among various service providers. Jonathan Mallahan, President of Catholic Charities Housing Ventures, remarked on the positive early outcomes, stating that the efforts have led to fewer individuals living outdoors. The outreach teams are strategically placed in all four precincts of the Spokane Police Department, including the downtown area.

To further enhance outreach, Spokane 311 will soon launch a new reporting feature, enabling the public to report individuals in need of assistance. This initiative aims to facilitate near real-time dispatch of outreach teams. The city's commitment to addressing homelessness reflects a proactive approach to supporting vulnerable populations.
