Spokane City Council members will introduce a new ordinance titled "Safe and Accessible Spaces" at the upcoming Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting. This legislation will enable Spokane Police Department officers to offer services to individuals willing to accept help, alongside the option to cite repeat violators of camping and obstruction laws. Under the ordinance, camping on public property will be illegal, with an emphasis on protecting natural resources such as waterways and trees. Council Member Zack Zappone highlighted the importance of a balanced approach to assist vulnerable populations while enforcing laws against those who refuse help. Michael Cathcart underscored the collaborative effort among council members to ensure community safety and uphold standards of respect.

The ordinance also addresses issues related to illegal fires and litter in public spaces. Council members anticipate discussing the ordinance, which aims to clarify enforcement discretion for officers. Public participation will be encouraged, with a link provided for community members to view the ordinance and register to testify.
