Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department co-hosted a weeklong training event on Dialogue Policing beginning October 6th, aimed at enhancing communication skills for law enforcement during large gatherings. This comprehensive 40-hour course, developed by the Columbus Police Department, attracted multiple agencies from the Spokane area. Officers were introduced to the Dialogue Policing model and engaged in Q&A sessions with local activists and media, allowing for diverse perspectives. The training focused on vital skills such as de-escalation techniques and science-informed crowd psychology. To ensure comprehension, officers participated in training scenarios that simulated real-life interactions.
At the end of the week, officers completed certification requirements, marking their readiness to implement these skills in the field. This initiative is significant for improving community relations and promoting public safety. The program aims to create a safer environment during large gatherings by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and community members.
