Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department co-hosted a weeklong Dialogue Policing training event starting October 6th, aimed at equipping law enforcement with essential communication skills for managing large gatherings. The comprehensive, 40-hour course, developed by the Columbus Police Department, focuses on fostering collaboration between police and community members. Participants engaged in a Q&A session with local activists and media to gain diverse perspectives on community issues. The curriculum also included vital training on de-escalation techniques and crowd psychology, essential for maintaining peace in high-tension situations. Officers participated in practical training scenarios to reinforce their understanding of the material before obtaining certification.
This initiative underscores a broader movement towards improved police-community relations in Spokane. Local agencies' participation indicates a collective commitment to enhancing public safety through dialogue. The program aims to build trust and understanding, crucial for effective policing.
