Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department partnered to host a weeklong training program on Dialogue Policing, which seeks to enhance law enforcement communication skills. Developed by the Columbus Police Department, the course is a 40-hour evidence-based program that includes perspectives from community activists and media representatives. Participants learn de-escalation techniques and crowd psychology, crucial for managing large-scale public gatherings. Training scenarios are utilized to reinforce the material and ensure officers can apply their skills in real-world situations. This initiative involved multiple local agencies, fostering collaboration between law enforcement and community members.
The Dialogue Policing model aims to build trust and understanding within the Spokane community. By focusing on effective communication, the training seeks to improve public safety and community relations. Ultimately, the program reflects a commitment to modernizing policing practices in response to community needs.
