Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department co-hosted a weeklong Dialogue Policing training from October 6th to enhance law enforcement communication skills. This comprehensive, evidence-based 40-hour course, created by the Columbus Police Department, focuses on improving interactions between police and community members during large-scale events. Officers were introduced to the Dialogue Policing model and engaged in discussions with community activists, enhancing their understanding of different perspectives. The training included a Q&A session with both activists and media representatives, ensuring a well-rounded dialogue. Key components of the curriculum were de-escalation techniques and science-informed crowd psychology.
Officers participated in practical training scenarios to solidify their skills before completing certification requirements. This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering better community relations and improving public safety. The collaboration among various local agencies underscores the importance of communication in effective policing.
