New Street Outreach Team Close 96 Encampments in First 10 Days

Spokane, WALocal News

The City of Spokane's new street outreach teams, launched in partnership with Catholic Charities, achieved notable success by clearing 96 encampments within their first 12 days. While most sites were empty, many individuals accepted offers for housing and behavioral health services. Mayor Brown praised the outreach teams as essential for the city's plan to create sustainable change and emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration among service providers. Jonathan Mallahan, President of Catholic Charities Housing Ventures, expressed optimism about the initiative's early results, highlighting that fewer individuals are forced to live outdoors. The coordinated outreach teams are active in all four precincts of the Spokane Police Department, addressing the needs of the community.

Early next week, Spokane 311 will launch a reporting feature enabling the public to report individuals needing assistance, facilitating prompt outreach team responses. This initiative aims to enhance community involvement and support for vulnerable populations. Ultimately, these efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to addressing homelessness and improving public safety in Spokane.
