Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department held a weeklong Dialogue Policing training focused on enhancing communication skills for law enforcement. The training, developed by the Columbus Police Department, offers a thorough 40-hour curriculum that emphasizes evidence-based techniques. Officers participated in sessions on de-escalation, crowd psychology, and engaged with local activists and media during a Q&A to foster mutual understanding. The program included practical training scenarios to ensure officers could effectively apply the skills learned. This initiative is part of a broader movement to improve police-community relations in Spokane, particularly during large public gatherings.
The training attracted multiple agencies from the Spokane area, highlighting its regional significance. The Dialogue Policing model aims to create a collaborative environment between law enforcement and community members. By enhancing communication, the program seeks to reduce tensions and improve public safety outcomes.
