New Street Outreach Team Close 96 Encampments in First 10 Days

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane's new street outreach teams, launched in partnership with Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington, closed 96 encampments within their first 12 days of operation. While many sites did not have residents, the outreach teams successfully connected individuals to behavioral health and housing services. Mayor Brown stated that these teams are vital for achieving long-term change through better cooperation among various service providers. Jonathan Mallahan, President of Catholic Charities Housing Ventures, expressed optimism about the outreach teams' ability to connect vulnerable individuals with necessary services, leading to fewer people living outdoors. The teams are strategically placed in all four precincts of the Spokane Police Department, ensuring a wide reach.

Next week, Spokane 311 will roll out a new outreach reporting feature, enabling the public to report individuals in need by calling 311 or visiting their website. This initiative aims to enhance real-time responses to those requiring assistance. Overall, this coordinated approach signifies a commitment to addressing homelessness effectively in Spokane.
