New Street Outreach Team Close 96 Encampments in First 10 Days
Spokane's new street outreach teams, launched in partnership with Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington, have successfully cleared 96 encampments in their first 12 days. Although most sites were uninhabited, the outreach teams facilitated connections to housing and behavioral health services for many individuals. Mayor Brown emphasized that these teams represent a vital part of the city's strategy for sustainable change, calling for enhanced coordination among various service providers. Jonathan Mallahan, President of Catholic Charities Housing Ventures, expressed optimism about the progress, stating fewer individuals are forced to live outdoors because of these efforts. The outreach teams operate from all four Spokane Police Department precincts, ensuring broad coverage.
Next week, Spokane 311 will launch a new outreach reporting feature, allowing the public to report individuals in need via phone or online. This initiative aims to prompt near real-time dispatch of the outreach teams to assist vulnerable residents. The city’s coordinated approach reflects a commitment to addressing homelessness effectively.
