Spokane Valley officials and project partners celebrated the groundbreaking of the Pines Road/BNSF Grade Separation Project on October 16, 2025. This $48 million initiative focuses on separating train and vehicle traffic at the intersection of Pines Road and Trent Avenue to enhance public safety and transportation efficiency. BNSF Railway has successfully completed the construction of two railway bridges, with roadway work expected to conclude by spring 2027. Mayor Pam Haley commended the collaborative efforts that significantly reduced costs and improved construction efficiency. The project will save four hours of vehicle wait time daily, improve access to key arterials, and facilitate the creation of nearly 9,000 new jobs.

Funded by state and federal grants, it represents the city’s largest capital improvement project to date. It will also eliminate the risk of train collisions and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The project aligns with the 2004 Bridging the Valley Plan, underscoring its significance for long-term economic growth.
