City of Spokane Announces Next Chapter of HOME Starts Here Initiative

Spokane officials will unveil a new phase of the H. O. M. E. Starts Here initiative, focusing on enhanced engagement and enforcement strategies to tackle public camping and open drug use.

The announcement will occur during a Public Safety meeting and a subsequent press conference. Mayor Lisa Brown emphasized a dual approach of compassion for individuals in crisis and accountability for those violating laws. Councilmember Zack Zappone stated that the updated engagement and enforcement ordinance aims to connect resources to those ready to accept help while addressing public disorder. Police Chief Kevin Hall noted the need for officers to have greater discretion in issuing citations and arrests. The new strategies will include increased targeted outreach and community involvement.

Recommendations will be developed in collaboration with community partners and the Spokane Police Department. Further details will be shared during the upcoming press conference.
