City of Spokane Announces Next Chapter of HOME Starts Here Initiative
Spokane city leaders will introduce the next phase of the H. O. M. E. Starts Here initiative during a Public Safety meeting and a Tuesday press conference.
This initiative includes the launch of a daytime navigation center and a new coordinated street outreach team to combat public camping and open drug use. Mayor Lisa Brown emphasized the need for compassion while holding individuals accountable for violating laws. Councilmember Zack Zappone expressed that the updated engagement and enforcement ordinance would help connect resources to those in need while addressing public disorder. Chief Kevin Hall pointed out that officers need greater discretion in determining when citations and arrests are warranted. The city will work with community and business partners to draft recommendations for the ordinance.
Spokane aims to create a balanced approach that ensures safety for all residents. Press conference details will be announced soon.
