SPD launches alternative reporting option for sexual assault survivors
The Spokane Police Department (SPD) unveiled Seek Then Speak, a new reporting option aimed at supporting sexual assault survivors in Washington state. This initiative allows survivors and their support systems to gather vital information related to medical care and supportive services while maintaining privacy. The self-guided interview component is available for survivors aged 18 and older, enabling them to proceed at their own pace and understand the significance of the information being collected. After completing the interview, survivors receive a PDF document that they can either save for personal records or submit to law enforcement when ready. Seek Then Speak is specifically designed for situations that do not necessitate immediate law enforcement intervention.
For urgent matters, individuals are still advised to call 911. This program reflects a growing recognition of the need for accessible resources for survivors, helping them navigate their options. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance support systems for sexual assault survivors in Spokane and beyond.
