City of Spokane Announces Next Chapter of HOME Starts Here Initiative

Spokane city leaders are set to unveil the next chapter of the H. O. M. E. Starts Here initiative, focusing on public camping and drug use.

The announcement will occur during a public safety meeting and a press conference this Tuesday. The initiative will enhance police discretion in issuing citations and introduce new outreach strategies. Mayor Brown highlighted the importance of balancing support for individuals in crisis with the need for community safety. Councilmember Zappone reinforced that the updated enforcement ordinance aims to connect people with resources while ensuring accountability for those who repeatedly violate the law. Police Chief Hall noted that the updated ordinance will align with the recently launched street outreach model and daytime services.

The city plans to collaborate with community and business partners to draft recommendations for this ordinance. Further details about the press conference will be provided soon.
