City of Spokane Announces Next Chapter of HOME Starts Here Initiative

Spokane city leaders will soon announce the next phase of the H. O. M. E. Starts Here initiative, focusing on addressing public camping and open drug use.

Mayor Lisa Brown, Councilmember Zack Zappone, and Police Chief Kevin Hall will outline their strategy during a Public Safety meeting and a press conference. The initiative includes the launch of a daytime navigation center and a new coordinated street outreach team to enhance community resources. Recommendations for updating the engagement and enforcement ordinance will be developed with input from community and business partners, as well as the Spokane Police Department. Mayor Brown emphasized the dual goals of compassion and accountability, aiming to connect individuals in crisis with necessary resources while enforcing the law. Chief Hall pointed out the importance of giving officers the discretion to issue citations based on individual circumstances.

The city leaders' commitment to addressing public disorder highlights the urgency of the situation for residents. Further details will be shared during the press conference on Tuesday.
