SPD launches alternative reporting option for sexual assault survivors

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department (SPD) has launched Seek Then Speak, an alternative reporting option designed for sexual assault survivors. This initiative, developed by Ending Violence Against Women International (EVAWI), allows survivors and their support people to gather important information about medical care and supportive services. The "Speak" component enables survivors aged 18 and older to conduct a self-guided interview, which educates them on the reporting process and their rights. After completing the interview, survivors receive a PDF that can be saved for personal records or submitted to law enforcement if they choose to report. This new pathway aims to provide crucial resources to survivors in Spokane, enhancing their support network.

Seek Then Speak is particularly significant as it addresses the needs of those who may not be ready to report immediately. The program emphasizes the importance of survivor autonomy and informed decision-making. For emergencies, individuals are still encouraged to contact 911.
