SPD launches alternative reporting option for sexual assault survivors

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department has launched Seek Then Speak, an alternative reporting option designed for sexual assault survivors. This national initiative, developed by EVAWI, allows individuals and their support networks to gather vital information about medical care and supportive resources. The “Speak” feature provides a self-guided interview for survivors aged 18 and older, which gathers critical information and educates them on their rights throughout the process. Once completed, the interview generates a PDF that survivors can save or submit to law enforcement at their discretion. This new pathway aims to support survivors in Washington, particularly in Spokane, by offering them essential resources without the immediate pressure of reporting.

Seek Then Speak is tailored for situations that do not require immediate law enforcement response, ensuring survivors can seek help at their own pace. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for survivor-centered approaches in addressing sexual violence. Resources for those in immediate danger or requiring urgent assistance remain available through established emergency services.
